Flat panel/LCD displays?

Post by boat » Thu May 19, 2005 8:23 am

anyone have any "real world" (read: gaming :P ) experience with flatpanels/lcd's? there have been some decent deals floating around on these lately, so ive been entertaining the possibilty of picking one up.... :) or if no direct experience, indirect, as in going to a friends house and using/playing/watching theirs. :?:

my, what a buoyant topic i floated...  :P guess not many are considering flatpanels yet :-?

anyhoo, some of the caveats ive found out in my research are...

16ms response time or less is typically considered "gaming" worthy, with 20ms borderline. and the problem with a slow response time is "ghosting" where the pixels cant keep up with the changing image, so it has trails, etc.

another is you would need a beefy system/video, in that flatpanels are essentially made for one resolution, which is usually pretty large in terms of graphics...so gaming at these higher resolutions would put a strain on the video subsystem. now, it is possible to run different resolutions, but then the image becomes pixelated and/or washed out looking.

:-?

ahem! seems you exluded me bub. i coulda told ya all you had learned if you hadn't been picky. :P

i beleeb i mentioned our 19" flat panels at work run at a native 1280x1024. even running at 1024x768 makes plain ole 2d stuff like text, charts, & graphs look like crap.

also, even though i haven't gamed with it, i have run commercial dvd's on it. the movies look good considering it's a monitor, but during high action scenes where there is lots of contrasts and/or shadows you will see the ghosting effect even if it's brief. i don't watch movies on my puter, that's what i have a tv for, so for everyday work stuff flat panels are awesome but i still wouldn't consider one for gaming just yet.

Are these reviews written by professionals? IMHO, amatuers' reviews stink. :-?

ive been reading both. i think its about 50/50...the "pro" ones use synthetic methods for testing out hardware, whereas with "amatuers", u get "real world" exprience/opinions...but both methods can be biased...why i try to go thru as many sources as possible :P ;)

Indeed, swizeet. And since it's largely a CRT with a better mechanism for shooting electrons at phosphors, maybe it won't have the limited lifespan issues that plasma/LCD displays seem to have, although it does look like it's effectively single-resolution. No marketing hooey about production or availability, tho. Wonder how far out these things are?

well, theres a slight chance i might order this Fuji/MMI today. newegg did have it for like 305 or 310, but now theres no trace of it on their site... :? but tigerdirect has it for 269.99, after rebate...but the straight price is 319.99, which is only like 10 more than newegg had it, which isnt that bad <shrug> :)

oh - and if anyones interested, the 'deals' that got me interested in possibly purchasing an lcd were a coupla dells...

DELL UltraSharp 2005FPW - which coulda been had for about 400$ after coupons.

and

DELL UltraSharp 1905FP - which coulda been had for about 250$ after coupons.

0X ;)

yes...apparently im a glutton for punishment, and have a tendency to order stuff on like fridays and thereof...  i was thinking/hoping that it woulda at least made its way a lil bit over the weekend, but noooo...the departure scan was yesterday at like 10am, whereas the origin scan was on the 27th at 10pm...der :? and its standard ground shipping, so ima hope/expect tomorrow or so  0X :drinking:
