A New Kinda Processor

Post by [NME]T-Bone » Tue Mar 08, 2005 7:13 pm

any of you catch the article on the PPU (physics processing unit) that was posted on /. today? i think that would work out well for engines like source that eat up chit loads of cpu. heck, my 2ghz even struggles playing hl2 dm. granted i don't have a newer graphics card, but i had no problems playing hl2. dm gets a lil choppy with more than 5 or 6 peeps playing.

sweet! can't wait to see what direction all these new processors are taking. when programming, i try to take advantage of designing mutithreaded apps, but am very limited by the processor and it's capabilities. sometimes mutithreading even causes the cpu to take a performance hit, even on pentium ht processors. having muticore and/or cell processors along with ppu processors should make things easier on us programmers and all apps can benefit from them.

looks like rise of nations will be the first game to use the ppu.

you'd think they would pick a better title to show off the hardware.
