upgrade/convert?

Post by boat » Thu Apr 19, 2007 1:42 pm

just a note that ill probably be converting back to a vanilla phpbb when phpbb3 comes out. as a vanilla install is always easier to maintain, plus ive loosely been following its development, and it looks pretty nice as well as feature-rich. on top of the 'behind the scenes' stuff like backend optimizations. as well, it more or less has most of the features that phpbbplus has, except that its all in a nice, officially released and supported package and not a bunch of 3rd party mods slapped together, on a predominately german site

anyhoo, here's a few pertinent links for anyone interested...:

featurelist-
http://area51.phpbb.com/docs/features.html

dev home page-
http://area51.phpbb.com/

dev forums-
http://area51.phpbb.com/phpBB/

phpbb.com (i think the main site is currently running v3)-
http://www.phpbb.com/community/

so no major changes just yet, as phpbb3 is still on a beta release, though sounds like theyre going to be starting the release candidate (RC) phase soon ;)

and a side note that i may be doing some overdo maintenance in the near future, so there may be some downtime experienced. :drinking:

:ohyeah:

welp, after some pokin', prodin' and hammerin', i was able to do a test install/conversion of the latest phpbb3 nightly beta release, to play around with and test. if anyone is interested, you can find it here...

http://boat.dyndns.org:8080/phpbb3b/index.php

*note: this is merely a test board to check out the new features, etc of phpbb3. its not a "production" release, and is not officially supported by phpbb yet. my main goal for the install was to see if the latest converter worked, and amazingly it did, and even appears to have kept all the attachments! :pbt:

so if you feel like it, kick it, spit on it, look under the hood and get a feel for it, because once it has a "supported" release, theres a good chance i will upgrade/convert to it. :D

it comes with two styles...their "new" one called "prosilver", which is the new default, and theres a "subsilver2" which has the look and feel of the "current" phpbb default theme. (i personally like the subsilver styling, but see for yourself :P )

seems like links open in the same window/tab instead of a new window/tab like the current phpbb.

to convert or not to convert, that is the question... :? :P

well they released the first Release Candidate (RC1) recently, so from here on out it's officially supported...sooo, to upgrade/convert or not to upgrade/convert... :look3:

from what i can tell its practically the same as the beta i had installed before (linked above), and the subsilver2 wasnt installed by default, which is probably a good thing, as it didnt appear that all the little icons and stuff were working properly.

well not 100% fond of the new style/layout of phpbb3...that right sided user profile stuff in the posts just seems odd and kinda makes posts hard to read, imo. but since phpbb3 has pretty much the feature set i was going for when installing phpbbplus (minus the portal part) and the fact that its all in one nice, officially supported package...its easier to manage :?

look and feel vs ease of administration... :?:

the counter to the look and feel would be that there will of course be styles released that may be more appealing. so then the question would be to wait until something like that occurs or just bite the bullet    :P

dont wanna lose all 6 of the barns connections do to a cosmetic change  :P ;)

if/when i make this upgrade, i may have to use a temporary domain/path and/or redirect, because when it converts phpbb2 to phpbb3, it actually leaves the old boards intact...so i may even start using something like bopat.net.forums. any ideas? if i did that, then i would feel obligated to create a root page/portal under bopat.net, which i guess could have its pluses and minuses, for instance its easier to remember bopat.net than it is for barn.bopat.net, given that most users are used to wildcards other than www ... :pbt:

edit: that said...anyone come across any lightweight, clean, generic web portals that might be of interest?

btw, i went ahead and enabled the subsilver2 style that has the same look/feel as before, if anyone is interested (dont think all the icons/images were properly setup with that, which is why i was gonna keep it disabled, so use at your own risk :P ;) )
