winders/xp cron file backup?

Post by boat » Tue Dec 19, 2006 2:24 pm

anyone know of any good windows/xp cron scheduler and/or file copy/backup scheduler?

we had a little file deletion incident at work on our measly 3 computer network, so i was going to try and figure out a way to schedule daily/weekly file copy/backups important files. i would use the built-in backup utility, but it seems to save all the backups in its own file type and i would like to keep it either as-is or just zipped.

so what i would idealy like for it to do would be once a day or once a week simply copy/zip the files of interest to another location on the same computer and/or even create another copy to another machine on the network, and to have it all nice and separated by date...so after each the task is run each time, youre left with...

c:/backups/
c:/backups/061201/
c:/backups/061201/file1.mdb
c:/backups/061201/file2.xls
c:/backups/061202/
c:/backups/061202/file1.mdb
c:/backups/061202/file2.xls
c:/backups/061203/
c:/backups/061203/file1.mdb
c:/backups/061203/file2.xls
...
//networkpc/backups/
//networkpc/backups/061201/
//networkpc/backups/061201/file1.mdb
//networkpc/backups/061201/file2.xls
//networkpc/backups/061202/
//networkpc/backups/061202/file1.mdb
//networkpc/backups/061202/file2.xls
//networkpc/backups/061203/
//networkpc/backups/061203/file1.mdb
//networkpc/backups/061203/file2.xls

or even a dated zip file and directory containing the backed up files/folders.

i started to do a quick xp scheduler task, but it looks for a program to run at whatever time...so i guess i would have to maybe create some batch file or something like that, if i were to go that route.

i did a coupla brief google searches and most of those turned up file-sync utilities, but im wanting more of a "system restore" idea for files, where i can just open up an older archive if need be.

you don't have a copy of 2003? another admin uses it quite a bit at work. also writes .bat files calling robocopy and runs the bat file via task scheduler. i'll check with the dude tomorrow and let ya know more.
